BIISC TWO-LINED SPITTLEBUG FIELD ASSOCIATE – ID# 226348.

(2) Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (up to twelve (12) months in duration with a possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), working for the Big Island Invasive Species Committee (BIISC), located in Kealakekua, Kona, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,788/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Facilitates in protecting Hawai‘i`s natural resources and agricultural production by assisting with implementation of measures to prevent the spread of invasive species, with special emphasis on the mitigation of harm from two-lined spittlebug (Prosapia bicincta), TLSB. Assists with conducting surveys for TLSB and providing positive identification of TLSB infestation to relevant parties. Assists technical staff with forming response measures and communicating the measures to the landowners/managers.  Collects and enters experimental data. Keeps appropriate  records of activities. Assists with extension and research activities including  preparation of extension materials (e.g., documents, flyers, and other materials). Carries out basic office administration and data entry procedures. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience working in an   agriculture or natural resources related position.  Some college coursework in biological sciences or  related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biota/natural history and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of field activities relating to natural resources management/integrated pest management. Knowledge of common introduced insect species in Hawai‘i. 

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication. Ability to keep complete and accurate records. Must possess a valid driver`s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i`s No-Fault Driver`s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee`s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to work outdoors in rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions. Able to backpack and lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:   

Associate`s Degree from an accredited community college in Agriculture, Pest Management, Biology/Entomology,  or a related field. Experience in ranching, integrated pest management, invasive species control, or public outreach/education with an agriculture or natural resources focus.
