BIISC INVASIVE ARTHROPOD OUTREACH FIELD ASSOCIATE I – ID# 226045.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), working for the Big Island Invasive Species Committee (BIISC), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,788/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Supports BIISC`s outreach, education, and community support programs to mitigate the impact of invasive species, with a focus on arthropods and mollusks and their associated impacts and diseases. Assists in the creation of original educational content regarding invasive pest species in the form of presentations, webinars, graphics, hands-on activities, print/online/video content, and updates on the BIISC website. Shares educational content with the public and partners in person or online. Interacts regularly with members of the public and occasionally with minors. Participates in general outreach efforts. Documents and provides regular reports on work plans, activities, survey data, and summaries of results. Generates support for BIISC`s effort to curb the spread of invasive pests. Drives a project vehicle to work sites. Provides field and outreach support to research and mitigation efforts by BIISC and partners for invasive pest control objectives, including trapping, baits, survey protocols, pesticide application, and other activities as appropriate. Assists in the collection, preservation, and documentation of plant and insect specimens according to standard curation protocols. This is a progression series job in which the employee will be expected to perform with increasing independence on progressively responsible duties. Quantity and quality of work is expected to increase as levels increase. Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on time-in-grade, rather upon employee`s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs. Through experience, demonstrated competence, and operational needs, may be hired at the appropriate level. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION

Associate`s Degree or equivalent coursework in Entomology, Horticulture, Agriculture, Pest Management, Biology or related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and one (1) year of work experience in natural resources related outreach or field work may substitute for an Associate`s Degree.)

EXPERIENCE

Progression job with minimum experience requirements for Level I, and combination of experience and demonstrated competence and abilities for Level II. It will assume the employee to start at Level I (unless justified and qualified to start at a higher level). Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on “time-in-grade”, rather upon incumbent`s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs. Up to one (0-1) year of experience in field activities related to natural resources management.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biota/natural history and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of field activities relating to natural resources management. Knowledge of common introduced insect species.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication. Ability to keep complete and accurate records. Must possess a valid driver`s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i`s No-Fault Driver`s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee`s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to work outdoors in rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions. Able to backpack and lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:   

Bachelor`s Degree in Entomology, Horticulture, Agriculture, Pest Management, Biology or a related field. Ability to work independently to achieve project goals. Experience in public outreach, education, marketing, or public relations with an agriculture or natural resources focus.
