Title:  Maintenance Technician

Reports to: Operations Manager 

Status: Full Time – Non-Exempt  

Shangri La is a vibrant compound situated on a spectacular, 5-acre, oceanside property in Honolulu. It integrates a 14,000-square-foot house with multiple outbuildings, comprising a series of interlocking spaces, both indoors and out: rooms, courtyards, lanais, terraces, gardens and numerous water features. The property includes spaces for reflection and for gatherings.    

Historically operated exclusively as a museum to showcase some of its collection of 4,500 objects from diverse Muslim cultures, Shangri La is in the midst of a strategic transformation that envisions the institution as a global center for personal and societal transformation.

POSITION 

The Maintenance Technician plays a key role in stewarding Shangri La`s distinctive 5-acre oceanfront site by ensuring that its facilities, systems and grounds are maintained to the highest standards. Reporting to the Operations Manager and working in tandem with the Operations team, the Maintenance Technician performs property-wide cyclical maintenance and repair tasks that support the ongoing care and functionality of the center. This role contributes to both capital and non-capital renovation and restoration projects of Shangri La`s buildings, grounds, equipment, utilities and vehicles.  

Daily responsibilities line up with designated maintenance schedules and include support for special projects and cross-departmental needs. Through this work, the Maintenance team helps advance the foundation`s mission by maintaining a safe, functional and welcoming environment for all who visit and work at the center. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Facilities Maintenance: Preserves the integrity, accessibility, and presentation of Shangri La`s historic buildings and public spaces to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all. 

• Performs carpentry tasks, including construction, repair, drywall finishing and structural framing. 
• Conducts basic electrical work: replacing lighting, repairing outlets and addressing wiring needs. 
• Executes plumbing repairs, including leak fixes, drain clearing and minor installations. 
• Paints and prepares interior and exterior surfaces. 
• Replaces window and door hardware, including glazier and blinds install. 

Mechanical and Equipment Maintenance: Maintains and optimizes building systems and tools to ensure reliable performance, occupant comfort and collections preservation. 

• Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC, mechanical systems, appliances and tools. 
• Monitors and services pool and water feature systems, including chemical level testing. 
• Maintains logs and service records of all equipment and system checks. 

Vehicle and Grounds Maintenance: Supports the safety, functionality and appearance of Shangri La`s outdoor spaces and transportation resources. 

• Conducts routine vehicle inspections, cleaning and fluid checks. 
• Assists with irrigation systems, hardscape upkeep and equipment operation. 
• Supports landscaping and exterior cleaning tasks as needed. 

General Support: Provides flexible, cross-functional support to facilitate smooth operations and enhance the visitor and staff experience. 

• Assists with event setups, furniture moves and cross-department support. 
• Maintains safe and organized work environments in all areas. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

• Demonstrated work experience in facilities maintenance or a related field. 
• Proficient in the safe use and operation of maintenance tools and equipment.  
• Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with colleagues and external partners. 
• Ability to work in varied outdoor conditions, including heat, sun exposure and wet weather. 
• Physically capable of performing demanding tasks that include lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, bending, climbing, working at heights and operating power tools.  
• Willingness to work flexible hours for special events, including weekends, evenings and holidays.  
• Valid Hawai`i driver`s license and a clean driving record. 

 COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

• Anticipated starting hourly rate is $21.50-$26.90, and the final offer will depend on experience.
