TMA RESTORATION FIELD ASSOCIATE – ID# 225264.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Three Mountain Alliance (TMA) located in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) on the island of Hawai`i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $3,927/Mon.
DUTIES: Works within Three Mountain Alliance (TMA) partnership restoration areas to assist in the TMA native plant nursery and the field to support the native plant restoration program. Outplants native plant seedlings in the field and propagates plants in the greenhouse and nursery. Uses pesticides to control plant pathogens in the greenhouse and non-native plants in the field to prepare for out planting sites. Installs nursery and greenhouse infrastructure. Establishes vegetation monitoring plots in the field and collects data to evaluate vegetation community changes through restoration activities and in response to fire and rehabilitation actions. Identifies plants in the field. Enters data into computer databases and assists with preparing summary reports of restoration accomplishments and challenges. Prepares seeds for storage, instituting best practices of the TMA Seed Bank. Independently and collaboratively conducts field collections for native species identified by TMA partners (including the National Park Service) as priority targets for storage. Collects seeds, cuttings, or whole plants from the field. Sometimes works with TMA field crew to carry out fence construction, inspection, maintenance, and alien plant monitoring and control (mechanical/chemical). Must be able to hike on obscure trails with a forty (40) pound backpack and camp occasionally for up to four (4) nights in remote areas.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
Associate`s Degree from an accredited community college in Botany, Terrestrial biology, Horticulture, or related field. (High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years of experience in Natural resource management may substitute for an Associate`s Degree.).
EXPERIENCE
One to three (1-3) years of experience with field restoration and greenhouse work. Up to one (0-1) year of experience carrying out restoration or vegetation monitoring. Up to one (0-1) year of experience handling a variety of native plant species` seeds, processing, and following protocols for proper storage. Experience with native plant propagation techniques. Experience mixing pesticides and its safe use and application. Experience with computer database entry and quality checking.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of pesticide mixing, application, use, and safety. Knowledge of propagation techniques, such as seed germination and cuttings. Knowledge of plant nurturing techniques, such as fertilization and watering. Knowledge of proper seed collection, processing and storing techniques. Knowledge of vegetation community monitoring and restoration outplant monitoring techniques.
ABILITIES & SKILLS
Ability to learn and utilize safety data sheets (SDS) and pesticide safety procedures. Ability to organize work and teach other employees. Ability to identify native and non-native plants in a field setting. Ability to identify native Hawaiian plants and invasive plant species. Demonstrated ability to use word-processing programs. Must possess a valid driver`s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i`s No-Fault Driver`s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual or automatic transmission.
Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete an ATV/UTV safety certification course within six (6) months of hire. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within six (6) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee`s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within six (6) months from date of hire.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS
Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions. Able to backpack, lift, and carry forty (40) pounds. Must be able to conduct fieldwork in dense vegetation under difficult conditions (e.g., rain, cold temperatures, hot xeric environments, and poor footing).

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor`s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Botany, Wildlife Biology, Conservation Biology or in a Biological Science with at least two (2) non-introductory courses in Botany or Ecology. Experience identifying and surveying plant populations of species native to Hawai‘i. Experience with fence construction, inspection, repair. Experience with chainsaw use and safety in a professional setting.
