Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii (RMHC-HI) provides a home-away-from-home and essential support services to families with seriously ill or injured children receiving medical care in Hawai‘i. RMHC-HI is part of a worldwide global network of independent chapters.

Job Summary:

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Hawaii (RMHC-HI) is seeking a visionary and results-driven Chief Operating Officer (COO) to serve as a critical member of our executive leadership team. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the COO will provide strategic direction and hands-on leadership across the organization`s daily operations, ensuring seamless execution of our mission to support families with seriously ill or injured children.

The COO will be responsible for project management, facility operations, human resources, budgeting, and overall organizational performance, aligning all operational functions with the organization`s long-term strategic goals. As a trusted leader, the COO will champion a culture of “one team”, support, and innovation.

In addition, the COO will serve as the staff liaison to the Facilities Committee of the Board of Directors, guiding discussions and decisions related to capital improvements, infrastructure planning, and facility readiness.

This role is ideal for an executive with a proven track record in operational leadership within the nonprofit, healthcare, or mission-driven sectors—someone who thrives in a non-profit culture and environment, has the ability to manage staff, and is passionate about making a tangible impact in the community.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership and Project Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day internal operations of RMHC-HI to ensure operational excellence and mission alignment.
  • Lead multi-departmental projects, including facility upgrades, systems improvements, and organizational initiatives.
  • Translate strategic plans into clear operational goals, metrics, and deliverables.
  • Ensure cross-departmental collaboration and performance.
  • Oversee organizational reporting processes, including coordination with RMHC Global, annual reports, and tracking of key outcome metrics.

Facility Management

  • Oversee and manage the maintenance, safety, and operations of RMHC-HI`s two residential Houses and Hospitality Carts at Kapiʻolani Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Moanalua.
  • Manage vendor contracts, facility maintenance schedules, renovation projects, and capital improvements.
  • Oversee maintenance reserve planning and the operational replacement calendar.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable health, safety, and regulatory standards.

Human Resources and Talent Management

  • Oversee human relations (HR) and personnel matters.
  • Manage the relationship with the outsourced HR firm and coordinate the resolution of staff-related issues.
  • Collaborate with department heads to ensure effective workforce planning, job design, and performance management practices.
  • Oversee the execution of HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, performance evaluation, and policy compliance.

Volunteer Recruitment and Outreach

  • Oversee volunteer recruitment, training, retention, and engagement strategies.
  • Develop and implement initiatives to grow a mission-aligned, committed volunteer corps to support operations, events, and programs.
  • Oversee community outreach efforts to strengthen RMHC-HI`s brand presence and partnerships.

Finance, Budget, and Fundraising Alignment

  • Supervise the Director of Finance and oversee all budgeting, audits, forecasting, and financial reporting processes.
  • Manage the organization`s operating budget and ensure alignment with strategic priorities and resource needs.
  • Ensure financial discipline, transparency, and operational efficiency across all departments.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development to align financial strategy with fundraising efforts and support donor stewardship as needed.

Technology and Systems

  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Understand basic IT security principles and data compliance regulations.
  • Utilize and manage shared systems such as Chat GPT Teams, Google Drive, Dropbox, and shared network drives.Leverage online resources and software systems to improve organizational efficiency.

Qualifications/Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

Required:

  • Bachelor`s degree in communication, business administration, nonprofit management, public administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of leadership experience in operations, with management experience ideally in a nonprofit, healthcare, hospitality, or human services setting.
  • Proven experience managing budgets, financial systems, and multi-departmental operations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in project management, facility oversight, and human resources leadership.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor diverse teams in a mission-driven environment.
  • Excellent communication, planning, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. and work at indoor and outdoor fundraising events.

Preferred:

  • Master`s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience managing capital improvement projects and vendor contracts.
  • Familiarity with Hawaii`s business community, culture, and nonprofit landscape.
  • Experience in volunteer program development and staff recruitment.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: Starting at $105,000, commensurate with experience
