KMWP COMMUNITY OUTREACH & EDUCATION ASSOCIATE I – ID# 226415.

Regular, Full-Time, Limited-Term (not to exceed two (2) years in duration from date of hire), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Ko‘olau Mountains Watershed Partnership (KMWP), located in Pearl City, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $4,220/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Assists with public education and outreach efforts, working closely with KMWP Outreach Specialist and other project staff, to raise public awareness of watershed threats and generate support for KMWP`s community control efforts. Encourages favorable public relations and support of KMWP`s natural resource objectives. Coordinates and leads volunteer events and workshops related to Albizia threat mitigation and control in the field. Communicates and collaborates with KMWP partners, media, community organizations, volunteers, civic leaders, and local cultural groups in joint outreach efforts. Responds to requests or questions related to Albizia control and treatment from the general public. Assists in developing content and curriculum for classroom presentations. Conducts school and private group outreach talks, and assists with the development of cultural and biological talking points for public events, as well as displays and outreach materials. Drives to project sites and public events. Assists with securing and maintaining access to public and private property. Assists in the preparation of reports, and prepares publications, press releases and other public outreach documents under the guidance of the outreach specialist. Performs other duties as assigned by KMWP Outreach Specialist, including office management support as requested. Obtains information on plants and land access and ensures information is filed in the project records/database. Must be willing to routinely work irregular hours, evenings, and weekends. This is a progression series job in which the employee will be expected to perform with increasing independence on progressively responsible duties. Quantity and quality of work is expected to increase as levels increase. Progression from one (1) level to the next is not dependent on time-in-grade, rather upon employee`s demonstrated abilities, competence, and operational needs.  Through experience, demonstrated competence, and operational needs, may be hired at the appropriate level. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: 

EDUCATION

Associate`s Degree from an accredited community college.

EXPERIENCE

Three to five (3-5) years of experience in an active research, public outreach, or resource management program (e.g. public relations, education, general administrative, inter-agency coordination, community outreach, cultural education, or other related experience) aimed at protection or restoration of Hawai'i`s ecosystems or culture.  

KNOWLEDGE

Good knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai'i. Good knowledge of basic methods to document a natural resource-related project. Good knowledge of Hawaiian tradition and cultural practices.  

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Proficient in word processing, photo editing, design software and spreadsheet computer applications. Skilled with internet use including research, information security and utilizing common social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram). Ability to regularly work on weekends, attend public/volunteer events, and camp overnight occasionally. Must possess a valid driver`s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver`s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i`s No-Fault Driver`s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee`s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to hike on steep, rough, uneven terrain in remote areas and be able to lift and carry at least forty (40) pounds unassisted. Must be able to conduct restoration work.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings.   Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:   

Familiar with biological principles and resources pertaining to Hawaiian ecosystems and alien/invasive species. Knowledge and experience with PCSU and/or RCUH policies and procedures. Knowledge of Hawaiian language and cultural practices. Experience working in an office to support and promote biological field activities. Experience in education, marketing, design, or related field. Experience and knowledge of ArcGIS or other mapping/data software. Knowledge of social marketing principles. Basic knowledge of Albizia.
