Description
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is seeking a motivated, analytical, and detail-oriented student assistant to support the Tribal Advisor in outreach and engagement efforts with California Tribal communities.
The student will assist with special projects focused on maintaining and improving a contact database used for Tribal outreach. Responsibilities include updating and validating key information, conducting quality checks on contact records, and assisting with geographic mapping related to Tribal communities and territories.
This position offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public service and government operations while supporting initiatives that strengthen communication and collaboration with Tribal governments throughout California.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.
Majors/Fields of Study
Public Policy, Economics, Government Administration, Data Management, Data Analytics, Native American/Indigenous Studies or any related field of study.
Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Compensation
$20.50 to $27.00 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of at least two years of college coursework.
- Must submit a cover letter with answers to the supplemental questions listed in the application instructions.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Experience working with spreadsheets, databases, or data tracking tools.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
- Strong attention to detail and data accuracy.
- Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
Preferred Qualifications- Interest in public policy, public administration, tribal relations, geography, data analytics, or government operations.
- Familiarity with mapping tools, GIS, or geographic research.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel or database management.
- Interest in working with Tribal governments or community outreach initiatives.
- Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority. Duties and Responsibilities- Assist in maintaining and updating a Tribal outreach contact database.
- Conduct data quality checks to ensure accuracy and completeness of records.
- Research and update contact information for Tribal governments and related organizations.
- Support the Tribal Advisor with outreach tracking and special projects.
- Assist with mapping and geographic identification of Tribal communities.
- Organize and analyze data to support outreach and engagement efforts.
- Prepare summaries or basic reports related to outreach activities.
- Perform other administrative and analytical tasks as assigned.
Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
Working Conditions Work is performed in a hybrid environment or as determined by Supervisor.
Students/Employees will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI Work from Home Agreement. The decision to permit an employee to work from home is at the discretion of the supervisor or employer and may, at any time and with or without cause, unilaterally terminate the option to work from home.
