POSITION STATUS: 1.00 | Permanent

SALARY RANGE: BU29 | SR25

SALARY RATE: $136,584.00 (Annual Salary) based on the FTE

JOB DUTIES: The RPN VII has 24-hour responsibility andaccountability for the management and operational activities of the Critical Care Services subsection, including the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. Primary responsibility is to plan, organize, and control the budget, material resources, and capital resources, as well as all clinical and non-clinical functions within the Critical Care Services subsection. It ensures a safe, therapeutic environment with medications, supplies, and equipment necessary to deliver high-quality patient care. In addition, this position will determine staffing methodology, direct and coordinate the staff activities, monitor staff performance, ensure competencies, and provide for the educational needs of all staff members. The Director is responsible for ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and standards governing emergency and intensive nursing services and for performing other duties as assigned. This position may require working shifts, weekends, and holidays.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.

BASIC EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: For nursing positions, applicants must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Two (2) years of professional nursing work experience. For positions in the class Registered Professional Nurse VII, all applicants must have had one year of experience comparable to the class Registered Professional Nurse VI or two years of experience comparable to the class Registered Professional Nurse V in State service.

Supervisory Experience: One (1) year of professional nursing experience, which included: (1) planning and directing the work of others; (2) assigning and reviewing their work; (3) advising them on difficult problem areas; (4) timing and scheduling their work; and (5) training and developing employees.

Administrative Aptitude: Applicants for Registered Professional Nurse VII must have demonstrated administrative aptitude. Administrative aptitude may be demonstrated in experience that shows strong affirmative evidence of the necessary administrative abilities. Such evidence may be in the form of success in regular or special assignments or projects which involved administrative problems; e.g., in planning, organizing, promoting, evaluating, controlling and directing programs; providing staff advice and assistance; interest in management demonstrated by awareness of managerial problems and the ability to solve them; completion of educational or training courses in the areas of management accompanied by the application of the principles which were learned to work assignments; management's observation and favorable evaluation of the applicant's leadership and managerial capabilities, success in trial assignments to organizational and/or administrative tasks.

CERTIFICATION: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Health Care Workers is required at the time of appointment. ACLS and PALS must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.

LICENSE REQUIRED: License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii. For certain positions, possession of a motor vehicle operator's license is required.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Knowledge of nursing theory and practice; nursing techniques and procedures; nursing literature and current trends and development in nursing. The ability to apply nursing theory and practice in planning and giving nursing care, recognize, interpret and evaluate symptoms of patient's condition, and take appropriate action. The employee should be able to initiate and maintain working relationships with members of the medical staff, administration, nursing and other departments and agencies affiliated with the hospital; facility in dealing with and developing policies and procedures experience or documented evidence of competence in the area of practice, administration, and/or leadership skills; knowledge of JCAHO requirements, and those of other federal, state, or private regulatory/review organizations with which the hospital interacts. Ability to communicate well with individuals at all levels; work as a team member; shows management, leadership, decision-making, interpersonal and communication skills.
