Introduction

The Department of Revenue is seeking multiple Revenue Agent positions in the Individual Income Tax (IIT) and Sales and Use Tax (SU) Sections in the Audit Bureau of the Income, Sales and Excise Division. The IIT positions are headquartered in Madison at the State Revenue Building on Rimrock Road. The SU positions may be headquartered in the Madison or Milwaukee DOR offices .

Position Summary

Individual Income Tax Audit Agent - This is an objective level position responsible for preparing assessments and refunds based on federal audit reports, state agency reports, computer selected leads, and other predefined criteria, using judgment in determining when to refer a taxpayer file to an auditor for an expanded scope audit. These positions also correspond with the taxpayer to obtain additional information and resolve taxpayer objections to assessment and refund notices.

Sales & Use Tax Audit Agent - This is an entry level position responsible for the review of registration documents pertaining to motor vehicle, all-terrain-vehicle (ATV), utility vehicle (UTV), aircraft, boat, snowmobile, trailer, personal watercraft (PWC), recreational vehicle (RV) and mobile home.The position will provide customer service, correspond with taxpayers, respond to routine taxpayer inquiries about letters or notices received, review routine taxability situations, handle basic appeals, and process payments received.

Salary Information

The starting pay rate for this position is $25.16 per hour.

The classification of this position is Revenue Agent, which is in Pay Schedule 07, Pay Range 04. Pay will be set in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan in effect at the time of hire. Starting pay for current state employees may vary based on applicable provisions in the Compensation Plan.

Job Details

Background Checks: Due to the nature of this position, final candidates will be subject to criminal background, fingerprint, and tax compliance checks.

I-9 Requirements: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of appointment. The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.

Probationary Period: An 18-month probationary period will be required.

Remote Work/Telework: These positions are eligible for remote work/telework up to 60%. After the first 12 months of probation telework may gradually increase up to 60% based on employee performance and work unit needs. Remote work is intended to be performed primarily in the State of Wisconsin.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have experience:
  • Experience providing customer service by phone, in writing and/or in person.
  • Experience reviewing documents for completeness and/or to take action on information submitted.

In addition to the above,well qualified applicants will have experience:
  • Experience working with tax laws (e.g., income, sales, withholding, excise).
  • Call center experience.
  • Experience explaining laws, regulations and/or statutes.
  • Experience testing system or software changes including automated processes.
