Accountability

Reports to the University Dining Assistant Manager - Homegrown Café and Common Ground Café.

Responsibilities

The Student Manager is responsible for all student personnel and staffing operations for the Homegrown Café and Common Ground Café. They will collaborate with the Assistant Manager to ensure the smooth functioning of general operations of the unit. Maintain constant contact with Floor Managers and Shift Leads to ensure new student employees are trained in the duties associated with their positions. Regular communication with all management staff is expected to pass on frequent updates, resolve issues or concerns, and praise outstanding employees.

Specific Duties

  • Responsible for recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and overall supervision of student employees associated with the Homegrown Café and Common Ground Café with the assistance of the University Dining Student Employment Office.
  • Work with the Assistant Manager to provide appropriate and timely scheduling of staff for open facility hours during academic semesters (weekends, winterim, summer break periods only as needed). Ensure all shifts are covered.
  • Approve bi-weekly timesheets for all student employees in PeopleSoft by the set deadline.
  • At the end of the new employee probationary period or at least once a semester, conduct employee performance evaluations as determined by the University Dining Student Employment Office.
  • Plan and coordinate mandatory student employee orientations at the beginning of each semester and monthly on-going trainings/meetings with the assistance of the Shift Leads and Floor Managers. Prepare and facilitate a detailed and organized agenda for all meetings.
  • Implement and maintain a program to assess student staff members' knowledge and skills to ensure effective performance in each position.
  • General knowledge of the service model in both locations.
  • Serve as a back-up when team members are not able to cover shifts or if additional support is needed.
  • Frequent communication with Floor Managers, Shift Leads, and full-time staff to learn of updates, suggestions, concerns, and respond to student employee conduct issues with the assistance of the University Dining Student Employment Office.
  • Attend monthly mandatory Student Manager meetings, semesterly orientations/trainings, and other Student Manager activities as deemed by the University Dining Student Employment Office and/or Assistant Manager.
  • Being held accountable and abide to the policies outlined in the University Dining Student Staff Supervisory, and Student Manager Contract.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management Team.


Qualifications
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, including weekend hours as needed.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, good interpersonal skills, strong oral communications skills, and active listening skills.
  • All applicants must be at least a part-time student (enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate or 5 graduate credits) and be in good academic standing (cumulative and semester GPAs of 2.0 or higher).
  • Applicants must pass a criminal background check (only criminal activity directly pertaining to the position description will be evaluated.)
  • Successful applicants must pass all UWSP mandatory trainings along with department specific (food handling) trainings as part of their employment onboarding.
  • Upon the completion of the eight-week probationary period, the staff supervisor will conduct a performance evaluation with results impacting the students' future employment status.
