The Staff Data Scientist is responsible for leading the design and development of analytical techniques at the intersection of AI/ML and biological sequence data. The work will support both internal R&D processes as well as external customer products, all with the goal of advancing Cepheid's diagnostic offerings. This position reports to the Senior Director of Machine Learning/Data Science and is part of the AI & Computational Biology group in the larger Technology & Innovation organization. The position is based in Sunnyvale, CA, with consideration for candidates located remotely or in the Boston, MA area.

The Technology & Innovation organization is responsible for incubating new products, techniques, and processes that keep Cepheid at the forefront of molecular diagnostics. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide thought leadership on challenging problems at the intersection of AI/ML and computational biology
  • Lead the design and development of computational tools that will accelerate molecular diagnostics R&D
  • Build AI/ML models to characterize pathogens from whole genome sequences
  • Explore applications of genomic language models to supervise learning tasks for sequence data
  • Design and implement robust model evaluation frameworks to assess production readiness to meet regulatory and commercialization requirements

The essential requirements for the job include:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Computational Biology or a related field and relevant experience as follows: Bachelor's degree and 9+ years of experience & post-education experience; Master's degree and 7+ years of experience & post-education experience; or Doctoral degree and 4+ years of experience & post-education experience
  • Strong foundation in ML / statistical learning fundamentals and hypothesis driven experimental design, including deep learning, statistical modeling, classification, regression
  • Experience with Python data and ML stack (Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Jax)
  • Experience developing ML models in a modern cloud environment

Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to travel; expected 5% overnight travel

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Machine learning models for sequence data
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics pipelines and sequencing databases
  • Developing machine learning models for healthcare and regulatory applications

    The annual salary range for this role is $145,000 to $200,000 USD. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. This range may be modified in the future. This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
