SALARY RATE: $43,272 (Annual Salary) based on the Full Time Employment
JOB DUTIES:
A. Billing & Collection responsibilities
1. Bills outpatients on appropriate claim forms (i.e., Hospital Claim form, UB-92 (Uniform Billing), Medicaid Drug Claim Form 204, Physical Claim Form HCFA 1500.
2. Follow up on assigned accounts.
3. Files claims on appropriate forms.
4. Follow up with the appropriate payor; obtain payments
5. Meets deadlines.
6. Work with patients in qualifying for charity care; resolve overpayments and charge corrections.
7. Verifies services as needed and works with departments to obtain missing charges or make corrections as necessary.
8. Answers inquiries pertaining to accounts either by telephone or through correspondence.
9. Interviews patients and/or responsible parties to obtain financial information to determine the ability to pay.
10. Contacts the patient or the responsible party who is delinquent in making payment or fulfilling promises.
11. Re-files claims with Medicare, Medicaid, HMSA, and other insurance carriers if claims are not settled within 60 days from the date of the initial claim.
12. Works closely with admitting resolving all billing/collections issues.
13. Receives and assists in investigating complaints and questions relating to hospital bills.
14. Identifies the issues impeding the collectability of an account, from the quality of admissions data to the inappropriate payor billing.
15. Discusses, with the appropriate Account Clerks, the nature of the complaint or question and the history of events leading up to the hospital charges.
16. Documents, updates, and corrects all communication regarding the account history in the billing system.
17. Requests, from the appropriate Account Clerks, for information needed for the re-filing of claims whenever necessary.
18. Retrieves accounts that have been written off or cancelled when reinstatement becomes necessary.
19. Prepares journal entries for review by the Patient Financial Services Manager and Accounting Manager to adjust accounts when necessary.
B. Other Duties and Responsibilities 20%
1. Maintain good public relations by tactfully clarifying misunderstandings that arise.
2. Communicates and interacts with patients and families positively and courteously.
3. Considers age-specific needs when serving or assisting patients:

___ Pediatrics (3-12 years) ___ Older Adults (greater than 70)
___ Adolescents (12-18 years)
4. Maintains the strictest confidentiality of all facility and facility-related employee/patient information.
5. Compliance with mandatory in-service requirements, e.g., patient rights, crisis prevention, annual mandatory health and safety, etc.
6. Participates in activities of the department, i.e., JCAHO, Safety, Performance Improvement, and Infection Control.
7. Adheres to hospital rules and regulations, policies, and procedures.
8. Attends mandatory in-services unless excused in advance by supervisor.
9. Plans and organizes workload and is aware and flexible to the acute needs of the section.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: High school diploma or equivalent.
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of typing, stenographic, clerical work, cashiering, data input, customer service skills or any combination of these experiences which duties demonstrated knowledge of English grammar, spelling, arithmetic, standard office equipment; and the ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, carry out procedures in clerical work systems, speak and write simply and directly, observe differences in copy and proofread words and numbers quickly and accurately, and operate various kinds of office equipment; and ability to deal effectively with others in eliciting information and providing service.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR GENERAL EXPERIENCE: An Associate's or Bachelor's from an accredited college or university may substitute for all of the General Experience required.
QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE: The number of years of experience required for any grade level represents the minimum amount of time necessary to qualify for the appropriate position, but length of time is not in itself qualifying. The applicant's work experience must also have been of a quality and scope sufficient to enable him to perform satisfactorily assignments typical of the grade level for which he/she is being considered.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
KNOWLEDGE OF: Office practices and procedures; grammar, spelling, punctuation and work usage; use of standard office machines; techniques of interviewing others to obtain pertinent information.
ABILITY TO: Make arithmetic computations; compare names and numbers rapidly and accurately; file materials numerically and alphabetically; follow oral and written instructions; communicate positively and effectively with staff, patient and patient family; work harmoniously with others; understand, explain and apply policies, procedures, rules and regulations pertinent to the admission of patients to an acute, skilled nursing or outpatient hospital or outpatient procedure; keep matters confidential; interview others to obtain pertinent admissions information; ability to speak and write English.
