Police Evidence Technician

Receives, stores, and issues police evidence and found property; performs a variety of clerical tasks; and performs other related duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Hawai'i Police Department - Area II Operations Bureau in Kailua-Kona. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of duties include receiving evidence from the Field Operations Bureau and the Investigative Bureau; tagging and accounting for all evidence; checking evidence for proper markings and identification; conducting inventory of all evidence stored; preparing monthly statistics on disposition of evidence; preparing monthly statistics on evidence received; maintaining evidence log; maintaining found property log; answering inquiries on evidence reporting procedures; answering inquiries on found property items; maintaining numerical evidence report file; releasing evidence to investigating officers for court presentation; releasing evidence for identification to interested parties; storing confiscated weapons and assisting in the disposition of same; acting as liaison between federal and military agencies regarding evidence of pertinence to them; testifying in court on the transaction of evidence; supervising assigned police cadets in the evidence room; witnessing the destruction of drugs and other vice paraphernalia together with vice personnel; accounting for and disposing of property received in coroner's inventory cases; receiving property from the country districts on closed/suspended cases; transferring money to Finance Director upon forfeiture or conviction; recording and storing property turned over to the department for safekeeping; recording and storing property turned over to the department for auction purposes; handling all communication involving evidence inquiries; handling all correspondence involving the return of evidence to owners or finders; disposing of worthless articles; performing clerical and office work; handling cash transaction for reports and as required accounts for same; and performing other related duties as required.

Minimum qualification requirements include a combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school, and two (2) years of storekeeping experience that included the handling of evidence and/or property or two (2) years of law enforcement experience that included the handling of evidence and/or property, and some typing experience, and must be qualified to carry and/or possess firearm or ammunition in accordance with state and federal laws, e.g., no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction, and possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable motor vehicle operator's license at time of filing. Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application. Knowledge of: office procedures and practices; property identification and characteristics; storage principles and practices; laws and regulations on evidence and found property handling and disposition; purposes and uses of standard office machines. Ability to: plan, set up, and maintain storage space allotments; keep records, summarize materials, and prepare reports; work harmoniously with others; follow oral and written instructions; operate typewriter or word processor.
