Duties Summary

This is the entry trainee level in the Biosecurity Inspector series, designed to provide a career-oriented introduction to the background, philosophy, concepts, scope and interrelationships of the State's plant and non-domestic animal quarantine and pest control programs. On-the-job training assignments provide practical understanding and initial introduction to the organization, programs, policies and objectives of the agency as well as furnish preliminary experience in the application of principles, procedures, work processes, techniques and scientific reference material to actual situations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Note: Applicants must be available to work rotating shifts which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Legal Authorization To Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in one of the following areas: Agricultural, Landscape, or Integrated Pest Management; Entomology; Horticulture; Nematology; Plant and Environmental Protection Science; Plant Pathology; Tropical Agriculture and the Environment; or Tropical Plant and Soil Science; OR Biological or Agricultural Science with coursework in entomology, nematology, pest management, plant and environmental protection science, plant pathology, tropical agriculture and the environment, virology, and related courses; plus coursework in agroecology, agronomy, botany, horticulture, plant physiology, tropical plant and soil science, weed science, or related courses. Ability to write clear reports, read and interpret complex material, perform basic arithmetic, and solve problems logically and systematically.
  • Driver's License: Valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Special Requirement: Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply.
  • Federal Criminal History Records Check: Pre-employment fingerprint-based check required for positions with unescorted access to secured areas; must be free of disqualifying convictions in the preceding ten years. The cost is applicant's responsibility, with possible reimbursement if clearance is obtained.

Salary and Work Schedule

Salary: $4,243 per month (SR-16, Step D). Shift Work: Applicants must be willing and able to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
