The Salvation Army is dedicated to providing children a safe environment where they can grow socially, mentally, physically, and spiritually. The Teacher Aide will provide support to the classroom Teacher by assisting with the development of each individual child enrolled in Ohana Keiki Day Care Center. Hours and shifts will vary according to the needs of the preschool.
Qualification requirements include being at least 16 years old and meeting one of the following education qualifications: High School Vocational Child Care Training Course or Orientation Training course at the Center. Teacher Aides must also be registered with the Department of Human Services (DHS) Early Childhood Registry and be assigned a Caregiver ID. Job offer is conditional upon the qualification requirements being accepted by DHS Early Childhood Registry. Upon successful registry with PATCH, the Aide must also complete the following: Negative TB Test or Negative TB Screening by a licensed doctor, DHS Fingerprint/Background Check, Hawai'i DHS Medical Form completed by a licensed doctor, Salvation Army's Protect the Mission (PTM) Training (Child Abuse Prevention), and State of Hawai'i Adult, Child and Infant CPR w/AED and First Aid (5 hrs).
Essential functions include using positive discipline techniques appropriate to preschool aged children, assisting classroom Teacher with supervision of children, assisting with keeping the environment organized and appropriate for the day activities, assisting with setting up and cleaning up of daily meals and activities scheduled, working with other staff members in carrying out age-appropriate activities, participating in workshops and training sessions when available, communicating any concerns with the Director, and displaying awareness of the mission of The Salvation Army to the public in a positive manner.
Other functions include performing other duties as assigned, able to lift up to 40lbs, working under stressful conditions, managing and prioritizing multiple projects in an organized and efficient manner, responding to crisis situations in a calm and effective manner, prioritizing multiple work tasks to meet tight deadlines, completing projects on schedule, maintaining confidentiality, and maintaining regular and punctual work attendance.
The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; driving a vehicle; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 25-50 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds; travelling by airplane; talking to co-workers, clients, vendors; written communication to and from co-workers, clients, vendor; talking on the telephones; responding to written or verbal requests of co-workers, clients, and vendors; training/giving verbal and written instructions; receiving verbal and written instructions; writing/composing written language; reading; visiting/working at other worksites; and communication via the latest technologies.
Valid Hawaii driver's license (if needed), prioritizing multiple work tasks to meet tight deadlines, and travel off-island as necessary (if needed) are required. Use office equipment such as computers, photocopiers, scanners, calculators, etc.
Most work will be indoors at Kona Corps Facility. Attendance at trainings, both in Hawaii and on the mainland, is required.
