Responsibilities
- Develops and directs competitive compensation programs for Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI) and Hawaiian Electric (HECO) to align with corporate philosophy and business strategies/objectives. Maintains a strategic view of compensation and its relationship to business strategy.
- Participates in the development of the total compensation philosophy and strategies for HEI and HECO. Develops and directs data-driven compensation strategies and programs aligned with corporate goals, including talent attraction, retention, performance, and internal equity.
- Works collaboratively with senior management to implement and maintain focus on compensation strategies. Provides education and communication to management employees at all levels regarding compensation programs. Maintains relationships with senior management and other employees.
- Provides benchmarking reports to assist in key business decisions in HR; ensures access to key market databases and data resources. Develops and maintains relationships with internal clients and external contacts.
- Collaborates with external consultants and vendors to provide effective compensation plans to meet business objectives.
- Administers compensation programs for HEI and the utilities (e.g., annual merit, manager and non-manager annual incentive programs, non-executive recognition). Ensures systems exist to administer programs and comply with legal and regulatory requirements (e.g., FLSA, wage and hour, EEO, ADA). Develops and administers related policies and procedures.
- Provides testimony and information responses supporting management compensation expenses in rate cases; evaluates and provides testimony on related legislation.
- Participates in the development of executive compensation programs; communicates with senior management regarding executive compensation matters and prepares materials for the Board. Assists in preparing and reviewing public disclosure materials.
- Acts as liaison on compensation matters between HEI and its subsidiaries. Oversees annual compensation proposals to the HEI and utility Boards and the HEI Compensation Committee for approval.
- Directs department personnel, including setting performance standards, coaching, training and development, evaluating performance, recognizing achievements, counseling, and initiating disciplinary action when appropriate.
- Oversees the executive and non-executive merit increase and incentive plan budgets. Determines operating forecasts and manages resources to meet divisional and corporate needs.
- Participates in HR strategic planning and other duties as required. Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
Knowledge Requirements
- Broad knowledge of general management practices and human resource management issues; trends and practices; and state and federal labor laws and regulations.
- Technical knowledge of compensation principles related to organizational design, job design and evaluations, salary structure, salary administration, bonuses/incentives, and market pricing.
- Advanced technical knowledge of business statistics and applications.
- Working knowledge of PCs and related software (spreadsheets, word processing, databases, presentations, etc.).
- Working knowledge of budgeting and forecasting principles and processes.
- Bachelors degree in business or related discipline, preferred, or equivalent experience. Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)/Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and/or Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) preferred.

Experience Requirements
- Extensive (8+) years exempt-level experience in human resources, with at least 5 years focused on Compensation administration and program development.
- Multiple (5-7) years of supervisory experience.
- Executive compensation experience is highly desired.
