Job Functions

Transmission Planning Engineer I Under direct supervision of higher level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital programs and vendor proposals for HECO, MECO and HELCO.

Transmission Planning Engineer II Under direct supervision of higher level engineers, performs transmission planning analyses to support capital programs, long range resource plans, developer proposals, and investigation of system contingency events for HECO, MECO and HELCO.

Responsibilities

  • Independently analyzes, evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques using Power Flow and System Analysis programs; uses judgment in minor adaptations and modifications; assignments have clear objectives and involve a limited number of variables.
  • Receive instruction on objectives and complex features; assist on unusual problems; work reviewed for sound professional judgment by Lead Engineer.
  • Prepare reports and recommendations and related planning studies in accordance with standard electrical systems modeling practices.
  • Conduct planning studies, basic economic studies and prepare associated reports.
  • Prepare cost estimates, cash flows, schedules based on data from the Engineering Department.
  • Perform project engineering and project management on selected projects.
  • Coordinate design effects by consulting engineers, evaluate proposals and bids for interconnection planning services and equipment; make recommendations.
  • Participate in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

Qualifications

  • BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge Requirements Thorough knowledge of engineering planning theories and principles; working knowledge of PCs and related software applications (spreadsheets, word processing).
  • Skills Requirements: Very good oral and written communication; ability to adapt to changing priorities; strong interpersonal skills; valid Hawaii drivers license or ability to qualify; meeting standards for driving positions policy.
  • Experience Requirements: BS degree in engineering or equivalent; substitution of 8 years of experience for degree allowed.

Transmission Planning Engineer II Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent; minimum 5 years relevant engineering experience; knowledge of emerging technologies (power electronics, wind, energy storage); PSSE Load Flow and Dynamic analysis proficiency; strong writing and inter-departmental coordination skills.
  • Experience in planning additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades of transmission systems; state licensure desirable.
