Electrician - Keahole

The H GK KEAHOLE, MAINTENANCE Department of the H GENERATION Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has a Bargaining Unit vacancy available. (Role: Non-Exempt)

Performs maintenance work and installs electrical equipment in generating stations. An Electrician at the maximum level, performs the following duties (at lower levels, performs the following duties under direction or direct supervision in accordance with the various stages of training):

  • Tests for, locates, and repairs electrical faults, such as grounds, poor contacts and broken connections on control, power and lighting circuits; potential and current transformer wiring; motors and starters; annunciator systems and similar electrical devices on A.C. and D.C. circuits.
  • Tests, maintains, and adjusts automatic remote control and similar devices including D.C. power systems.
  • Dismantles and inspects generators, motors, various types of circuit breakers and similar equipment. Varnishes windings and re-wedges as necessary; replaces parts and tightens loose connections; reassembles and adjusts equipment. Tests and filters transil oil, as required.
  • Works from blueprints: Installs conduit, pulls in conductors and makes connections; installs and replaces wiring on control switchboard panels.
  • Maintains custody of power plant electrical drawings, prints, and records.
  • Services exciter and collector ring brushers. Inspects and changes taps on transformers, checks connections, observes and repairs leaks and wipes bushings.
  • Removes bearings on electrical auxiliaries for inspection, cleans entire assembly and reassembles for service.
  • Adjusts disconnect switch contacts.
  • Services circuit breaker operating mechanism and makes breaker trip tests.
  • Services voltage regulators.
  • Sets up instruments for various tests such as hi-potting, megger tests, etc.
  • Erects rigging, operates bridge crane, and performs general maintenance such as painting, etc.
  • Installs electrical equipment and apparatus for new capital construction projects, in addition to modifications or additions to existing plants.
  • Directs the work of lower classified personnel on any or all of the above operation.
  • Operates equipment in unmanned plants for operational and maintenance purposes.
  • Follows rules and work practices, and takes responsibility for personal safety and safety of others.
  • Collaborates with and supports others trades and departments.
  • Assume an emergency management role, as assigned, and perform specific assignments or functions, as needed, in an event of an emergency, not to include routine trouble calls/callouts.

Performs similar and incidental duties as directed. May operate a company vehicle as required.

Basic qualifications include: Must pass the Edison Electric Institute Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) for Electrician progression system. Ability to identify and distinguish the difference between colors, including shades, hues, and tints. (for electrician related positions) Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives. Must be a graduate of applicable Apprentice Program or equivalent training and experience. Must pass practical on-the-job test and Company Written Job Knowledge Test. Must be able to pass minimum requirements for respirator use.

Role: Non-Exempt. Number of Vacancies: 1. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday. Work Hours: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Location: Kailua-Kona Hawaii Island. Wage: $37.18 - $54.90.
