I. Job Summary/Responsibilities:
Relays and expedites incoming, outgoing and interoffice calls for the hospital.
Functions as the communication center for security and team leaders and plays a key role in emergency response communications.
II. Typical Physical Demands:
Seeing, hearing, speaking, finger dexterity.
Frequent: gripping of an object, twisting body and reaching below shoulder level.
Occasional: walking, lifting and carrying usual weight of 1 pound up to 20 pounds, pushing/pulling weight up to 5 pounds, reaching at and above shoulder level.
III. Typical Working Conditions:
Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions.
Subjected to varying and unpredictable situations.
Subjected to stressful situations, e.g., codes, disasters, etc.
Subjected to many interruptions.
Possible exposure to violent or demanding patients or families in nearby waiting room.
IV. Minimum Qualifications:
A. Education/Certification and Licensure:
High school diploma or equivalent education.
B. Experience:
Six (6) months to one (1) year experience as a telephone operator preferred.
Prior telephone operator experience preferred.
Experience to demonstrate the following:
o Knowledge and skills in use of general office equipment, i.e., computer, facsimile, calculator.
o Good basic mathematical and organizational skills.
o Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
o Ability to respond to crisis calls and execute disaster plans.
o Ability to handle a variety of complex situations at the same time.
o Ability to problem solve with minimum supervision.
o Ability to work calmly in stressful situations.
Knowledge and skills necessary to operate a multi-line switchboard preferred.
