Job Summary

The Key Access Technician/Locksmith is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and upgrading mechanical and electronic locking systems to ensure the safety and security of facilities, personnel, and assets. This role includes key cutting, lock rekeying, master key system management, and troubleshooting access control systems, such as card readers, power hinges and electric strikes.

This position also collaborates with facilities management, security teams, and contractors to plan and implement secure access solutions in accordance with institutional policies and safety standards. They must possess strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret blueprints, access plans, and manufacturer documentation. In addition, they will be required to respond to emergency lockouts and perform after-hours service on a rotating or on-call basis.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair mechanical locks, door closers, hinges, and panic hardware.

  • Rekey locks and maintain accurate records of keys, cores, and master key systems.

  • Fabricate and issue keys according to university protocols and access level authorizations.

  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot electronic access control devices (e.g., keypads, proximity card readers, electric strikes, maglocks).

  • Maintain and update key control databases and digital access software.

  • Respond promptly to service requests, including lockouts, broken hardware, or access issues.

  • Assist with planning and execution of large-scale rekeying projects or access system upgrades.

  • Coordinate with Housing and Residence Life for semester turnover and special event access.

  • Work with IT or access control teams to integrate hardware with centralized access software.

  • Ensure compliance with ADA, fire code, and other safety regulations related to access and egress.

  • Participate in on-call rotation or respond to after-hours emergencies when required.

Minimum Qualification and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; trade certification or apprenticeship in locksmithing preferred.

  • 2–4 years of experience as a locksmith or in a similar role with mechanical/electronic access systems.

  • Familiarity with master key systems (e.g., Best/Falcon/Medeco) and key cutting machines.

  • Experience with electronic access control systems (e.g., Onity, Genetec, HID, or similar).

  • Valid driver's license and ability to pass background checks related to access to sensitive areas.

  • Relevant computer software applications.

License or Certification

Current Hawaii driver's license

Locksmith degree or certificate preferred

Work Schedule

Work hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a flexible lunch for 1 hour. This position is also the on-call technician for all after-hours and weekend emergencies. Some program activities may require work on the weekends, after hours, or on holidays, but not common. Travel is required for conferences and training sessions outside of Hawaii, and open for discretion for Oahu. The office is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, Devotionals and University Holidays.

Trainings and Evaluations

The employee is required to attend all training that is mandated/approved by the Director of Facilities Management. In addition, the employee is expected to meet with the direct supervisor for an annual performance evaluation. The supervisor will be evaluating direct reports and evaluating all employees in Campus Shops and suggesting raises for the employees.

Regulations

The employee will be expected to follow, understand and share FERPA regulations, CLERY ACT, TILE IX, ADA, etc.

Work Environment

The employee will work both inside an A/C workshop environment and outside on campus. May be subject to noise, dust, odors, and/or humidity.

Equipment Used

Equipment used are key cutting machines, lock installation tools, mechanical tools, software for code retrieval, lock picks, and a variety of small tools, office equipment, telephone, copy machines, printer, and computer.

Physical Demands
