The County of Hawai`i is hiring for two (2) immediate permanent full-time vacancies with the Animal Control and Protection Agency in Kailua-Kona. This Animal Control and Protection Officer II, SR-16 position is a career ladder position. The next level in the series is Animal Control and Protection Officer III, SR-18, $4,742/month. Persons hired into career ladder positions must meet minimum qualifications for the next level in the career ladder series, perform work at the higher level, and meet performance requirements to move to the next level in the career ladder series. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment. Special Working Conditions: The Animal Control and Protection Agency is a seven (7) day a week operation. Working hours may include four (4) day/ten (10) hour workdays, weekend, and holiday work as required. Exposure to hazardous, filthy, and/or obnoxious conditions.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to: graduation from high school, and three (3) years of experience handling animals, of which one (1) year shall have involved the enforcement, interpretation, or application of animal control laws, ordinances, regulations, or policies and procedures, and possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license at the time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.) Note: possession of a current CAETA Certificate of Completion is required prior to completion of probation, and possession of a current American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Certificate is required prior to completion of probation. Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application. Ability to: interpret, apply, and enforce, Federal, State, and County laws, codes, and regulations relating to animal control and protection; capture, handle, restrain, confine, and transport animals using methods, techniques, and/or special equipment; remain calm and impartial in confrontational situations; develop and maintain effective relationships with staff, government and community agencies; communicate information concisely and effectively orally and in writing; resolve problems and complaints; conduct investigations; safely operate a motor vehicle and equipment, and deal tactfully and effectively with staff, community groups, individuals, and the public.
