Salary: $4,933 to $6,754 per month (SR-19, Step C to K).

Duties Summary

The Radio Technician I installs and tests receivers, maintains and repairs radio and other communications equipment; designs, constructs and modifies communications equipment; monitors transmissions to determine proper use and clarity and performs other related duties as assigned. This class is distinguished by the performance of technical work in the installation, testing, maintenance, repair and modification of telecommunications equipment in the statewide program of civil defense. Supervision received is general, and work is performed in accordance with technical, program and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirements.

The Statewide Outdoor Warning Sirens constitute the core of public safety warnings for tsunami, hurricane and other catastrophic weather events in Hawaii. Proper staffing of Radio Technician personnel is paramount.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Legal Authorization To Work

The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

Basic Education/Experience: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria in addition to the Specialized Experience:

  • Graduation from a two-year program in electronics technology from an accredited community college, technical school or other comparable institution above the high school level.
  • Successful completion of a minimum of sixty (60) semester credits at an accredited college or university which included courses in calibration of electronic test instruments; electric circuits and systems; wave forms or radio-wave propagation; basic physics; and mathematics.

Specialized Experience: THREE (3) YEARS of progressively responsible technical work experience involving the installation, maintenance, repair, modification and system design of mobile radio communications units or related electronic equipment.

Driver's License: Possession of a valid driver's license is required for some positions at the time of appointment. The immediate vacancies have this requirement.
