Supervises and is responsible for a program concerned with the inspection of the construction, alteration, or repair of buildings and related structures for compliance with the provisions of the County of Maui Building and Housing Codes and other pertinent codes and ordinances, and adherence to approved plans and specifications; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of Building Inspector II in that the Supervising Building Inspector supervises and is responsible for the building and housing inspection program of the County of Maui; whereas the Building Inspector II inspects the construction, alteration or repair of buildings and related structures for compliance with the provisions of the County of Maui building and housing codes and ordinances, and other pertinent codes and ordinances, and adherence to approved plans and specifications.The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and six (6) years of experience in inspecting or supervising building construction work, three (3) of which shall have been in building code enforcement work.
License Requirements: Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3).
Knowledge of: The building and housing codes and ordinances of the County of Maui; the theory and standard practices, methods, materials and tools used in building construction including empirical formulae of structural stability and safety; proper inspectional methods and techniques; accepted safety standards; legal procedures involved in enforcing building and housing codes and related ordinances; principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to: Plan, assign, direct and coordinate the work of subordinate inspectors; inspect and review the inspection of construction, alteration and maintenance of buildings and structures and render decisions in conformity with pertinent codes and ordinances; recognize hazardous situations and other defects and determine means of correction; read and interpret plans and specifications, building and housing codes and ordinances and apply them to specific cases; coordinate building inspection with plumbing and electrical inspection; deal tactfully and effectively with building contractors, property owners, workmen and the general public; maintain records and prepare reports; give oral and written instructions.
