SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Program Supervisor I or Program Director I, the Shelter Manager is primarily responsible for the daily operations of the shelter facility and program. Responsible for promoting an environment that provides participants a sense of empowerment, improves their well-being, and increases their ability to live safely and independently. Ensures that participants' basic needs are met, i.e., they have food, clothing and shelter, and that they are safe and supported while in the shelter program. Models a trauma-informed approach and coaches staff to engage with participants and deliver services utilizing trauma-informed practices. Responsible for training all Shelter Workers, Domestic Violence Specialists and volunteers in accordance with contract and agency requirements. Supervises Shelter Workers, Domestic Violence Specialists and volunteers and ensures staffing coverage, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Ensures that policies and procedures are implemented and followed. Assumes responsibility for all written reports related to the shelter program. Maintains participant confidentiality at all times, and performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

  • Four-year College Degree from a school accredited by a recognized accrediting agency - general major. Requires basic knowledge or training in a specialized or technical field or trade, such as social work, professional accounting, finance, business administration, and marketing.

EXPERIENCE

  • Over two years, up to and including four years.
  • Other (Specify): Two years' experience working with victims of domestic violence or rape, or with perpetrators of domestic violence. Experience working with children exposed to domestic violence.

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of domestic violence dynamics and the impact on victims and their children, sexual assault, stalking and dating violence.
  • Experience practicing trauma-informed care highly desired. Strong interpersonal skills and experience mediating conflict.
  • Ability to engage, empower, and communicate effectively, respectfully, and empathetically with survivors from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.
  • Knowledge of community resources that can assist participants with moving towards a violence free life. Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable providing presentations and providing outreach to the community.

OTHER POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • This job requires a valid Hawaii driver's license, a clear driver's abstract, and use of personal vehicle to transport participants, as needed, as well as a willingness to travel in personal vehicle on an as-needed basis throughout the island.

  • The nature of this position requires the incumbent to be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • This position is subject to a criminal background investigation and continued employment is contingent on a record clear of convictions.
  • Continued employment in this position is contingent on successful completion of CPR, CPI and/or van driving training as such training is necessary to ensure ability/continued ability to perform essential functions of this job.
  • Continued employment in this position is contingent on successful completion of CPI classes OR other Behavioral Management certification as may be contract-mandated.
  • Continued employment in this position is contingent on successful completion of First Aid classes.
  • Requires contacts both inside and outside at all organizational levels. Requires considerable tact, discretion and persuasion to obtain results. May present new methods, programs, and controversial issues. Improper handling may affect operating results and the delivery of participant services. This program serves victims of violent crime.
