Starting rate of pay: $23.00/hr or $47,841.84/yr

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Store Director, the Grocery Manager is primarily responsible for assisting and working with the Assistant Store Director in all aspects of the Grocery department operations. Assists in the operation of the store with emphasis on the Front-End and Grocery departments. In the absence of the Assistant Store Director, the Grocery Manager assumes the responsibilities of the Assistant Store Director.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Customer service
  • Directly supervises 6 or more employees including Food Clerks, Grocery Clerks, Chill/Frozen Lead, Receiving Clerks and all other workers in the grocery department
  • Trains and retrains all Grocery Department Personnel towards improved efficiency and increased job knowledge
  • Proficiency in the ITASCA system
  • Assumes the role of Manager on duty when Store Director and Assistant Store Director are not on duty
  • Signs and approves all deliveries and orders, clearing of invoices, price changes, merchandise credits, weekly schedules based on a set weekly budget, personnel information forms, employee evaluations, accident reports, building maintenance job orders, and damage claim forms
  • Maintains and develops proper relationships with various vendors
  • Complies with and enforces all store activities in relation to governmental and regulatory agencies such as OSHA, Food and Drug Administration, and the Department of Health
  • Works to establish and maintain good working relationships with all other departments within the store, and all other Grocery Departments within the Times chain
  • Supports and promotes sales programs initiated by the company and at the stores
  • Plans, organizes, and delegates the day-to-day duties and projects of the grocery department, following up with staff to ensure completion
  • Prepares various management reports and schedules, such as work schedules, sales projections, budget reports, and other communications as necessary
  • Attends DWH meetings and conference calls as scheduled
  • Responsible for checking the sales floor regularly to ensure shelves are properly filled
  • Reviews work methods for efficiency and safety
  • Ensures that proper merchandising techniques are utilized
  • Handles customer questions, complaints, accidents, and special orders
  • Understands, enforces, and abides by all company policies and procedures

Other Job Duties:

  • Ordering of merchandise manually or through the ITASCA system
  • Daily cycle counts of the grocery floor
  • Ensures reclamation is input daily and maintains inventory accuracy
  • Stocks shelves, prepares sales floor, and conducts spot checks as necessary
  • Plans, prepares, and builds displays
  • Oversees and implements price changes
  • Receives merchandise and ensures authorized items are received
  • Reviews and controls inventory in the backroom
  • Oversees maintenance and cleanliness of the warehouse, grocery walk-in freezers, and the grocery sales floor
  • Ensures proper credit is received for damages returned to respective vendors
  • Takes inventory
  • Operates cash register and bags groceries as needed
  • Ensures security of the backroom
  • Completes any other tasks as deemed necessary by management

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to safely lift up to 50 lbs on own
  • Must be able to push and pull at least 1000 lbs
  • Stand for extended periods of time
  • Frequent bending and stooping required
  • Requires manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination for various activities
  • Must be 18 years of age or older (operates heavy machinery)

Work Hours:

  • On average, minimum 40 hours/week
  • May require working overnight, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Occasional longer shifts (10 hours) due to business needs
  • Must be able to work at any Times location on the island

Working Conditions:

  • Fast-paced environment that may be demanding and/or stressful
  • Work done primarily indoors with air conditioning
  • Warehouse is not air-conditioned and could reach temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit during summer months
  • Walk-in chills; temperatures between 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Walk-in freezer; temperatures below 0 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Working with machinery to relocate heavy loads
  • Changes in environmental temperature when working inside and outside of the store

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience in grocery operations or similar job experience
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in Grocery/Retail or similar job experience
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Able to effectively communicate in English
  • Good phone etiquette
  • Acceptable written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Able to accurately and efficiently complete work in a timely manner
  • Able to effectively prioritize work and meet deadlines
  • Able to quickly pick up and follow through with various projects
  • Troubleshooting/problem-solving ability

Compensation: Starting rate (as deemed by current pay schedule) or commensurate with experience.
