Research Corporation of the University of Hawai‘i is seeking a Restoration Field Associate to work with the Three Mountain Alliance (TMA) in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. This is a full-time, non-civil service position based in Hawai`i, with a monthly salary of $3,927.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in native plant nursery and field restoration activities, including outplanting native seedlings and propagating plants in the greenhouse and nursery.
  2. Use pesticides safely to control plant pathogens and invasive species.
  3. Install infrastructure and establish vegetation monitoring plots.
  4. Identify plants in the field and collect data for restoration progress reports.
  5. Prepare seeds for storage and conduct field collections of native species.
  6. Support fence construction, maintenance, and invasive plant control activities.
  7. Must be able to hike on obscure trails with a 40-pound backpack and camp in remote areas occasionally.

Qualifications:

Education: Associate's Degree in Botany, Terrestrial Biology, Horticulture, or related field, or equivalent experience.

Experience: 1-3 years in field restoration and greenhouse work; experience with native plant propagation, seed handling, pesticide use, and data entry.

Knowledge: Pesticide safety, propagation techniques, seed collection and storage, vegetation monitoring.

Skills & Abilities: Ability to learn SDS and pesticide safety, identify native and invasive plants, operate word-processing software, and drive 4WD vehicles. Must hold a valid driver's license and insurance.

Post-employment conditions:

  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Obtain First Aid/CPR certification within 3 months.
  • Complete ATV/UTV safety, helicopter safety, and chainsaw training within specified timeframes.

Physical requirements:

Ability to hike, camp, backpack, lift 40 pounds, and work in rugged, remote environments under various weather conditions.
