TheDEPARTMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENThas multiple vacancies located onHAWAII ISLAND (KONA), OAHU and MAUI.
Shift work: Some positions on Oahu require applicants to be available to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call. Mandatory overtime may be required.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS:
ALL TESTS will be administered on OAHU. If there are any changes, applicants will be notified by email. The Law Enforcement Department will notify all qualified applicants of the testing location, date, time, and other requirements via email. If travel is required to test, applicants will be responsible for all costs associated with travel. Multiple tests will be administered on a back-to-back basis on a given day.
Note: The starting monthly salary is at the minimum rate of pay advertised above.
Positions in this class of work receive classroom and on-the-job training in laws, rules, regulations, principles, practices, procedures, and techniques of law enforcement; operation of firearms and equipment; and physical conditioning.
As a trainee, perform duties under close supervision, usually assisting higher-level staff who provide detailed instructions. Assignments are designed to provide experience and training leading to independent performance of duties at the next higher level.
Incumbents must have the ability to:
- Learn and apply laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, court writs, and law enforcement principles and techniques;
- Operate a motor vehicle and learn to operate firearms and other equipment;
- Follow instructions, deal courteously but firmly with people, prepare clear reports, assist in patrol work, and perform related duties.
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:LEGAL AUTHORIZATION TO WORK: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the U.S., or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent, with courses demonstrating knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and ability to read and write clearly and comprehend complex material.
Desirable/Preferred Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college demonstrating report writing, reading, interpreting complex material, and problem-solving skills.
General Experience: Two years of work demonstrating abilities to read and understand complex material, write reports, and effectively communicate with people.
Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions as per the Minimum Qualification Requirements.
License: Valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
Other Requirements: Drug screening, background check, availability for rotating shifts, age of at least 21 upon class start, and compliance with firearm and PREA regulations.
Physical and Medical Requirements: Able to perform essential functions of the position.
Probationary Period: Must pass all phases of the Law Enforcement Recruit Class (LERC) and drug tests during a nine-month probation.
