The Department of Environmental Services (ENV),
Refuse Collection and Disposal Division, is hiring a Safety Specialist I. Located in Kapolei, this position assists the Administrative Specialist III in managing the division's safety program, which includes preparing and conducting training, preparing statistics and reports, inspecting operations and facilities, enforcing safety practices and requirements, and investigating injuries and accidents. You will be responsible for performing all duties safely and appropriately to ensure the safety of yourself, co-workers, and the public.

There is also an additional vacancy in the Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Division.

Special Work Requirements:

  • Possible field exposure to underground high voltage cables, vehicular traffic, handling of refuse, confined spaces.
  • May be required to respond to emergencies outside of normal work hours.
  • Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared civil defense emergencies.

Education Requirement:

Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, or a related field. Education obtained outside the U.S. must be comparable, with a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) provided. You may need to submit further information or original transcripts; unofficial transcripts are not accepted.

Verification Requirement:

Submit evidence of your education, such as an electronic copy of your diploma or official transcript showing the embossed seal or FCE. Alternatively, mail or drop off copies to the Department of Human Resources, 650 South King Street, 10th Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. All documents must be legible and complete.

Substitution:

Work experience may substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities typically gained from a bachelor's degree.

Experience Requirement:

One year of professional (post-bachelor's degree, non-clerical) experience in industrial safety and accident prevention activities, demonstrating knowledge of safety laws, hazards, safety devices, inspection principles, and safety education. Must also demonstrate the ability to make safety inspections, interpret laws, investigate accidents, and conduct safety training.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid driver's license (Type 3) prior to appointment.
