Introduction

The Associate Dean in the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) and the Hawaii Agricultural Experiment Station must be a visionary leader for Hawaii's agricultural, natural resources, and human resource research enterprises. The incumbent serves as a catalyst and facilitator to enhance multi- and interdisciplinary research funded by the State/Federal, private, foundations and non-government sectors. This individual must embrace the shared vision and mission for CTAHR and espouse the values of collegiality, ethical behavior, excellence and relevance. The Associate Dean and Associate Director for Research is a member of the CTAHR administrative team constituted of the Dean and Associate Deans, and is accountable to the Dean.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Provides leadership and establishes goals for a relevant and effective agricultural, natural resources, and human resilience research programs in consultation with the Dean and Associate Deans, department chairpersons, county administrators, faculty and clientele; approves, monitors and evaluates research projects; coordinates interdepartmental and interdisciplinary projects; and integrates research policies, priorities and programs with those of the Dean, the Associate Dean and Associate Director for Cooperative Extension and the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.

* Maintains liaison with the United States Department of Agriculture, coordinates CTAHR faculty participation in regional research projects and represents CTAHR regionally, nationally and internationally, including attendance at regular meetings of AgInnovation and the Western Association of Agricultural Experiment Station Directors.

* Coordinates on- and off-campus research centers, including plot and resource allocation, in consultation with department chairpersons, county administrators, and the Dean and Associate Deans. Acts as the Responsible Official (RO) for the BSL2 Select Agent Laboratory.

* Coordinates grants, grant preparation workshops, identification of potential funding sources and stimulates submission of grant applications for extramural funding. Develops and implements in collaboration with University resources, a faculty development program focusing on research faculty enhancement. Identifies strategic research priorities within the context of CTAHRs mission and goals.

* Participates in CTAHR budget development with the Dean and Associate Deans; and in faculty personnel evaluation (promotion, tenure, contract renewal).

* Serves on designated College, University and national committees related to research programs. Serves on advisory committees of other agencies/groups as requested and considered beneficial for CTAHR. Maintains close communications with agriculture, natural resource and community and family organizations and stakeholder in order to identify research needs. Advocates among CTAHR stakeholders in support of CTAHR research.

* Performs other duties as needed and as delegated by the Dean.

Minimum Qualifications

* Ph.D. in a discipline associated with CTAHR from an accredited college or university.

* Attainment of the academic rank of professor or equivalent, or to have a demonstrable record of comparable professional experience prior to appointment.

* Five (5) years of experience in higher education management or equivalent research leadership experience.

* Demonstrated leadership at the department chair, or higher, administrative position in agriculture, natural resources, family and consumer science, or related sciences.

* Have an established record of research productivity and extramural funding that would be suitable for tenure in a CTAHR department.

* Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative programs with faculty and non-university collaborators.

* Excellent communication skills and interpersonal abilities, along with the ability to work in a strong team environment to achieve CTAHR mission and goals.

Desirable Qualifications

* Involvement in administrative activities of regional and national research organizations, scientific societies, or similar organizations.

* A demonstrable national and international reputation in their area of expertise.
