Learning Program Coordinator

Shangri La is a museum for learning about the global culture of Islamic art and design through innovative exhibitions, guided tours, public programs and digital initiatives. It is the only standalone museum of Islamic art in the US. Built in 1937 as the Honolulu home of American heiress and philanthropist Doris Duke (1912-1993), Shangri La was inspired by Duke’s extensive travels throughout North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia and reflects architectural traditions from those regions. The permanent collection features objects from Spain, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, Iran, Central Asia, India and parts of Southeast Asia. Shangri La is a program of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation through the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.


Located within Shangri La’s center for public engagement, and under the direction of the Curator of Programs & Social Practice, the Learning Programs Coordinator oversees the museum’s educational programs, opportunities and resources: museum tours and visits (public, school, teacher and specialized), learning resources that enrich collections, exhibitions, public programs, residencies and tours, and professional development opportunities (internships, docents and volunteers). The ideal candidate believes that museums improve the quality of people’s lives, views exhibitions and collections as a catalyst for life-long learning and imagines museum experiences as adventures in learning.


Public Access and Engagement

  • Working with the Public Programs & Events Coordinator, oversee, facilitate and evaluate museum tours and visits (public, school, teacher and specialized) including the ongoing development of content and subject matter, tour administration, experience, safety, logistics, protocols, transportation and ticketing, and the training of docents and creation of supplemental tour materials;
  • Work with staff, curators, scholars, artists and other subject matter experts to research and develop tour content to enrich and expand the understanding of collections, exhibitions, programs and residencies;
  • Serve as the primary liaison with the Honolulu Museum of Art, schools, and community, culture and educational organizations, and institutional partners on the coordination of tour programs;
  • Oversee the required administration, budgeting, contracting, logistics and procurement required for learning programs;
  • Work with the Communications Specialist and other Shangri La colleagues as appropriate on the communication and marketing of tours.

Learning Resources

  • Work with colleagues, contractors, vendors, artists, scholars, subject matter experts and other thought partners to conceive, develop and produce creative curricular activities and materials (print, online, multimedia) that enrich and contextualize the understanding of Shangri La’s collections, exhibitions, history, mission, public programs, residencies and tours;
  • Develop and establish clear connections and outcomes between learning resources and Shangri La;
  • Oversee the required administration, budgeting, contracting, logistics and procurement required for learning resources.

Docents, Internships, Volunteers

  • Work with the Honolulu Museum of Art to administer the Shangri La tour program including the recruitment and onboarding of its docents, and serve as Shangri La’s primary manager for docents and oversee their regular and ongoing training and development, making certain that Shangri La tours and visits meet learning objectives and expectations for excellence;
  • Develop, administer and promote internship opportunities at Shangri La, including the coordination of the application process, ensuring the accomplishment of learning objectives by staff advisors, facilitating a professional educational experience and culminating experience, and evaluating internship experiences;
  • Develop, administer and oversee volunteer opportunities including the coordination of the application process, ensuring adequate training, tracking hours and schedules, and developing volunteer benefits;
  • Oversee the required administration, budgeting, contracting, logistics and procurement required for learning opportunities.

  • Bachelor’s degree (graduate degree or terminal degree preferred) in a relevant field and/or equivalent relevant work experience;
  • Keen passion for making Islamic art, culture and design accessible to the public through innovative and interactive education;
  • Enthusiasm for startup culture and a spirit of innovation regarding educational initiatives that deepen the role of museums as sites of informal learning;
  • Demonstrated experience teaching a variety of age groups and communities;
  • Experience developing, designing and coordinating museum programs;
  • Experience recruiting and coordinating tour guides and managing tours, internships and volunteer programs;
  • Experience with event management and program logistics, including technical equipment and materials, booking venues and vendors, and negotiating contracts with consultants;
  • Proven competence managing budgetary allowances and restrictions;
  • Proven competence collaborating with peers and colleagues;
  • Team-player mentality to work cooperatively and positively with colleagues, partners, consultants and a diverse public;
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft Office suite, Apple OSX, Adobe design and graphic software, databases, email and the web;
  • Experience documenting events (via audio, video and photography) and posting on social media platforms and the web a plus;
  • Versatility and ability to manage many projects and priorities simultaneously;
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work weeknights and weekends as needed;
  • Ability to travel occasionally (local and national);
  • Currently eligible to work in the US (US citizen or Permanent Resident).
