VMware Distributed Edge team in the Office of the CTO leads this charter in partnership with VMware Service Provider Edge BU. This is a highly visible, high-impact, industry shaping opportunity within the Distributed Edge team.**What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?**We are seeking a seasoned professional to lead our Distributed Fabrics Research and Advanced Development team. The successful candidate will have significant experience in system architecture, design and optimization of distributed cloud systems. This candidate must have strong credentials for creating intellectual property through research results, patents, systems design and prototyping. They will have worked with data center providers to identify and solve problems and they will have been successful in creating techniques, tools and/or platforms for federating heterogenous cloud systems spanning multiple geographies, that have become best-practice or been adopted as industry defacto and/or open reference design.As part of the OCTO Distributed Edge organization, you will be leading an elite team of developers, architects, and researchers responsible for research and development of Cloud Communications Fabrics leading the industry through the next chapter of 5G evolution, while defining a path for 6G. You'll have an opportunity to co-innovate with our industry partners, niche startups and the top talents at VMware as part of an industry shaping ecosystem**Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?**We are aiming to build a team almost from scratch. With that, you are expected to drive recruiting, onboarding, organizing, ramping up, and nurturing team members. The first 3-4 months will be busy recruiting and ramping up team members while also establishing initial grounds in various industry communities this team will be driving. We expect most of the team to be productive and start delivering by the end of the six months. By the end of the first year, we expect the team to contribute delivery of multiple outcomes with exceptional quality. The success of these outcomes will be measured by the breadth and depth of industry adoption of open architecture approaches for Cloud Communications Fabrics in ongoing 5G deployments as well as industry specifications charting B5G/6G evolution.**What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?**This is a technology leadership role overseeing a small team responsible for research and advanced development for Cloud communications Fabrics expected to underpin beyond 5G systems, leading into 6G. We expect hands-on, pulling up the sleeves when needed, but not micro-managing leadership. This will require a deep expertise in wireless communications systems and complex distributed systems, fundamentals of computer science, and experience in design and specification of distributed systems architectures. Experience in managing distributed teams for a global technology company is a plus.Major responsibilities and duties:+ Chief Technologist: Partner with BU peers to establish VMware technology direction and strategic roadmap of Cloud Communications Fabrics underpinning Beyond 5G Systems while also preparing for evolution of such systems for 6G.+ Crowdsourced Incubation: Drive multi-lateral partnerships and incubation ecosystems bridging across hyper scale cloud providers, wireless service providers, industry trailblazers, niche start-ups, academia, and governments to establish VMware's leadership in NextGen Cloud Communications Systems.+ Partner Co-creation: Engage with partners for co-creation of differentiated lab POCs and possibly also field trials leading to high value business opportunities aligning with broader ecosystem engagements.+ Industry Leadership: Represent VMware by taking leadership positions to drive technology development and specifications through ATIS NextG Alliance, 5G Americas, Open Grid Alliance and other B5G/6G communities across the globe.
