Job Summary

This job will focus on leading and supervising student workers to successfully execute the following types of Kumuwaiwai activities; Mahi'ai (cultivation and gardening), Malama ‘Aina (support services), Aloha ‘Aina (veneration of place), and Ho'okipa (Engagement). Care, protection, and maintenance of the cultural and ecological integrity of Kumuwaiwai Mission, Sites, and Programs.

Primary Responsibilities

  • General landscape duties: grass cutting, pruning, composting, and weeding

  • General Mahi'ai & gardening practices: planting, cultivating, harvesting, and mulching

  • Simple food processing and production: cleaning, washing, peeling, sorting, steaming, dehydrating, roasting, and grilling.

  • Cultural engagement protocols: Oli (chant), Pule (prayer), Ha'i'olelo (oration), ‘Aha (ceremony)

  • Limited work with animals: chickens, rabbits, bees, fish, etc.

  • Data Collection and Statistics gathering: observations, measurements, recording, documenting, and reporting

  • Engagement: demonstration, leading groups, presentations, and service

  • In addition to the student's basic and lead responsibilities of their job, the student is expected to assume a supervisor role of other student employees within the department

  • Orient new students in detail to his or her role in the department

  • Provide the training necessary to perform tasks

  • Ensure that students are performing the tasks defined in their job descriptions

  • Explain and demonstrate the standards of behavior expected of employees

  • Other duties as assigned

Education

High School

Work Experience

6 Months General Work Experience

Experience with Microsoft Excel, adobe, various data collection programs, devices, and software.

Physical Demands

Work in an outdoor environment with a high likelihood of getting dirty.

Lift & carry 50 pounds.

Operate simple landscape machinery: lawnmower, weed eater, tiller, and blower.

Operate cooking appliances & tools: stove, steamer, pressure cooker, and knife.

Base Rate Per Hour:

14.50

*Must exemplify the university Honor Code, including the Dress and Grooming Principles and Expectations

*Preference will be given to students who can work during academic breaks
